Title Research

Learning Comment:
Through looking at different opening sequences from a range of time periods, I was able to see how important typography is to the opening sequence of a film. It helps to let the audience know about the genre and construct the narrative without them realising it. It is also vital for demonstrating the tone of a film, through its use of colours, fonts and placement on the screen, which also help to build the audiences opinion of the film.
I will hopefully apply my knowledge of typography to my own opening sequence, which should improve how my opening sequence is presented to the audience.
The main aspects mentioned in the opening sequence are:
  • Institutional information
  • Film title
  • Protagonist (main character)
  • Other major cast (secondary characters)
  • Other minor cast
  • Casting director
  • Costume designer
  • Music producer
  • Editor(s)
  • Producer & co-producers
  • Director's name - presented last to highlight their importance

Audience Research

For this section of research I worked with Keeva Holder, Jaimie Hampton and Lucy Crow.

Learning Comment:

I felt that the audience research was really helpful as it gave me a better idea about what sort of opening sequence I should be making. We found out that girls are more likely to watch coming of age films, so we should make it tailored for them. However we did have more girls than boys answer the survey. We also found out that most people preferred comedies, which means that our opening sequence should possibly have a comedic spin on it. This idea was also reflected in the target audience of films and who was the main audience. We were also able to get peoples opinions on films, which meant we could watch them, and see which qualities were good and what didn't work so well.
